- Research and define the terms heirloom and Genealogy. Participate in a class discussion of both terms.
- Brainstorm and create a list of possible family heirlooms. For homework, talk to your family members about your task and see if they can help you add to your list. Come to class the following day with your family heirloom of choice. You can bring the object itself, a picture of the object, or a description of the heirloom you chose.
- Write a paragraph about your family heirloom. Describe the object as best you can and give as much background information as possible. If you do not have much information about your heirloom, give your hypothesis about what you think the story is behind your object. Also, include why this heirloom may be important to you, your family, or possibly the original owner.
- Conduct some research about your family heirloom. Try to put the object in a historical context. Research the object itself, the time period, the connection to your family, or any other related information that helps you better understand your family heirloom, its history, and importance. Take notes while you research, and include important information in your final presentation.
- Develop a way to present your family heirloom to your classmates. This can be completed in a variety of formats. Include as much information as you can to help best describe your heirloom, its history, and importance. Write a short proposal of your presentation and have it approved by Mr Napoleon before moving on. Once approved, prepare and practice your presentation.
- Give your presentation and take notes while classmates are giving their presentations. Highlight those that interest you or are related to you in some way.
